Introduction to Seki City, Gifu Prefecture

岐阜県関市の紹介

Seki City is located in the central part of Gifu Prefecture. The city's name originates from the "Nōshū Checkpoint," which once stood within its boundaries. Since the Kamakura period, Seki has been renowned as a hub of swordsmithing, producing famous swords such as the "Magoroku." Today, Seki continues to be Japan's top producer of superior cutlery products, carrying on the techniques passed down through generations.

Additionally, Seki attracts many tourists each year for the traditional "Oze Ukai" (cormorant fishing), held on the pristine waters of the Nagara River, known for its natural beauty. Visitors are drawn to the charm and excitement of this ancient practice, which can be experienced up close.

Seki is also home to Enku Shōnin, a monk born in Mino Province who is said to have carved 120,000 wooden Buddha statues, many of which are housed at the Enku Museum in Seki. With its rich natural beauty and cultural heritage, we warmly invite you to visit Seki City in Gifu Prefecture.

Seki City's Gourmet Cuisine

Seki City is also famous for its delicious local cuisine. We especially recommend dishes made with fresh eel, as well as ayu (sweetfish) dishes like ayu-don (sweetfish rice bowl) and ayu-tessa (thinly sliced sweetfish sashimi). Another popular menu item is the distinctive kuro karaage (black fried chicken). After enjoying the SEKI OUTDOORS KNIFE SHOW, be sure to treat yourself to the exquisite flavors of Seki City.
